The bar patrons of the 5 Spot in Little Five Points got some unexpected film education in their faces when Molly gave a rousing speech about the Atlanta film industry yesterday. The bar was hosting a “Reclaim Independence Day” event, celebrating all things independent and non-corporate, and what better way to show that than with some independent film discussion?
Despite being early in the day, a crowd had formed inside the relatively good sized venue, and was treated first to an interesting marching band type group. One chick even had an accordion. They covered some Gogol Bordello songs, which just so happens to be a favorite of Molly’s. Chuck was actually intrigued and thought he might check some more of their stuff out later.

Matt Nielsen from Cool Hat Productions was also scheduled to give a speech. After getting a little lost and unable to find parking, he finally located the bar and everyone went in to settle in for a few more bands to enjoy before the big speech. Unfortunately, due to some technical issues, Molly and Matt were scheduled to go on next!
After a quick pep talk and important coaching from Chuck, the two waded through the thick crowd to get ready to go on. A brief introduction was given and then Molly went up onstage to begin. After introducing herself and Zombie Cat, she showcased “The Wrath of Con,” the recent 48 Hour Film we filmed. A similar reaction was had by the audience tonight as it was at the 48 Hour screening; confusion, then oohs and gasps of wonder when they realized we had pulled off a stop motion film in 48 hours. This led to several people even coming in from the “block party” outside to come see what the fuss was about.
After the film, heralded by cheers and applause, Molly educated the sweaty masses about how the Atlanta film industry works and what it and everyone in it has accomplished. She covered the 48 Hour Film Project, ATL 365, Atlanta Horrorfest, independent features, the Georgia tax incentive, and much more, somehow cramming all this information into an hour’s time.
Matt gave a brief introduction to his company and himself before introducing his film called “All’s Fair in Love and War.” The short was filmed for the Rapid “i” movement contest, which Matt proceeded to inform the confused patrons about. It’s a contest in the same vein as the 48 Hour Film Project, though done in 50 hours, so it is clearly different. Matt responded to a series of rapid fire questions about him and his company before finally allowing Molly to finish up.
After wrapping the speech, Molly showcased “Mind & Iron,” which was a film that garnered the group much praise and adoration in the community and beyond despite being made before Chuck joined the group. As the credits rolled there wasn’t a dry eye in the house and we all gave Molly another big round of applause for her rousing and educational speech. Matt, Molly and Chuck celebrated by having a great meal at The Porter in Little Five and then seeing “Moon” at the Landmark Theater. We all recommend both!

Good for you, guys. Also, Molly – you have great taste in music. LOVE Gogol Bordello.
Why didn’t you tell everybody (via social networking, of course) that you would be there? We would have came out to listen to the rousing speech!
We kind of both twittered about it a bunch of times for that day and the days before. Lol. I see you don’t pay any attention to us. *smile*
